Here in the Levy Library's e-resources department, we've been fielding a lot of questions about the availability of the new DSM 5. Judging from the number of requests we've been receiving, psychiatry faculty, housestaff, researchers, and others are anxiously awaiting access to the new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition as soon as it comes out. We have some good news and bad news on that topic.
The good news is that the Levy Library will be providing access to the online DSM5 through our license to Psychiatry Online, as soon as it appears online. We have also pre-ordered the print book version, which will be shipped to us as soon as it is released on May 22. The bad news (or at least, slightly bad news) is that the DSM 5 will not be available as an ebook in Psychiatry Online until, according to the APA, "sometime in June".
So it looks like there will be a lag of a few weeks between APA's release of the print version and their release of the online version for libraries. Since most users want access to the e-version, it is unfortunate that there will be a delay. But, we should have access to the DSM 5 as soon as it is released in June! The print book will be available in the bookstacks by the end of May. Please let us know if you have any questions related to accessing the DSM 5 at the Levy Library.
