Levy Library's Spring 2012 Newsletter

The Library recently published our Spring 2012 newsletter, featuring timely library news and searching tips. A lead story for this edition of the newsletter is that the ever-popular UpToDate has now been licensed for off-campus use! You can now access UpToDate through the library's website whether you are on or off-campus.

Other news items include: Downloading books from Ebrary, Using Stat!Ref's mobile app, Proquest's new look, new training opportunites in the Library: learn about Mendeley or MetaCore from GeneGo, and an update on the activities of the Mount Sinai Archvies Division of the Library. Extended Fall Hours!

We're happy to announce extended hours for the library!  Starting immediately the library will be open until 1:50 AM Sunday through Thursday. 

The new open hours are:

Saturday: 9:00 AM - 7:50 PM

Sunday: 10:00 AM - 1:50 AM

 

Circulation services such as lending books and distributing copy cards, are available:

Labor Day Holiday Hours

Levy Library will be open on Monday, September 5 from 10 AM to 5:50 PM. Circulation Services and the Levy Library Computing  Help Desk will be available at that time, but Academic Computing, Interlibrary Loan and References Services will be closed. Our regular hours will resume when we reopen on Tuesday, September 6 at 7:45 AM.

New User-Friendly Website and Catalog

We're happy to announce that an extensive redesign of the library website is complete! Here is a sneak peak of our sleek new interface, which will go live when the server updates occur next Thursday:

 
 

We've gotten the message from you that some important functions, like Menu Maintenance are difficult to find on our current site. But with the new, highly usable design, you can just hit F1! And we've made sure to gather all of our most important resources together in this one easy-to-use page. Whether you are looking for Data Base Management, Scient. Amer. Discotest, or Spreadsheet, it is all right there, just one keystroke away!

Along with the Library homepage, we've also tweaked our catalog interface. You may not notice many changes, but we've tried to make the design more in-tune with the rest of the site. As always, this is the best place to go to search for books, journals, videocassettes and slide collections!

We hope you like the new designs as much as we do. Please tell us what you think! 

Come visit us on Presidents Day

We'll be open all 24 presidential hours. Circulation staff will be here to check books in and out, sell print cards and be generally helpful from 7:45 am until 11:50 pm, and staff at the computing help desk will be available to help with your computing needs and troubles from 8 am until 8 pm. Reference librarians won't be back until Tuesday, but we've anticipated your pressing Presidents Day related questions:

 1. Why yes, there are articles about George Washington in PubMed! The most effective way to find them is a search for Washington G[PS]: that [PS] indicates to PubMed that we're looking for the name G Washington as a subject (and not an author, affiliation, address, etc.). Who knew there were so many articles out there about George Washington's teeth?

2. MDConsult and AccessMedicine both have some good textbook chapters about Klinefelter Syndrome, which Washington may have had. But, even though it's a genetic disorder, you won't kind it in that grandaddy of genetic disease information, OMIM. Why? Because it's a chromosomal abberation (47, XXY), and OMIM doesn't generally include those.

3. The Chicago Manual thinks you call it "Presidents' Day". The Associated Press says "Presidents Day". The AMA doesn't seem to care, as long as you capitalize it.

New BioMed Central Membership

 
Mount Sinai is now a BioMed Central Supporter Member!  This gives Mount Sinai authors a 15% discount on the article processing charge when publishing in any of BioMed Central's 212 journals, including, for example, BMC Bioinformatics, BMC Medicine, BMC Systems Biology, Critical Care and Molecular Neurodegeneration.

BioMed Central is a pioneer of the open access publishing model, believing that immediate, world-wide, barrier-free, open access to the full text of research articles is in the best interests of the scientific community. All original research articles published by BioMed Central are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication. Authors publishing with BioMed Central retain the copyright to their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution License. 

Because it does not have subscription fees for its research content, BioMed Central defrays those costs with article-processing charges--processing charges that are now reduced for Mount Sinai authors. And Mount Sinai authors do publish in BioMed Central journals: click here to see the list of work published by researchers here and at NYU just in the last year.  A few examples of recent, highly accessed articles with Mount Sinai authors include:

Further Library Renovation: 10th Floor

The 2009 library renovations focused mostly on the 11th floor, bringing new classrooms, more computers, new furniture and an updated space. Now the 10th floor is getting a new look, with four new classrooms being built. The construction is getting underway now and will take place through Feb. 11. To minimize disruption, construction will occur between 12 midnight and 3:30 pm. It'll probably be best to study on the 11th floor instead of the 10th during the construction period (and we definitely ask you to stay on the 11th floor during our overnight hours), so we're adding more seats to the 11th floor to accomodate as many studiers as we comfortably can.

Also, the new renovation has led to some juggling of the print journal collection and our library catalog hasn't quite caught up yet, so if you need something from a print journal please give us a call at 212-241-7791 to make sure it's available before coming over to see us.

Library Now Open 24/7

Happy new year! We're happy to report that starting today, Levy Library will be open 24 hours, 7 days per week, including weekends and holidays. For now this is a pilot period: until June 30, the library will carefully track usage to determine whether these additional hours should be continued. Because we need to understand how the Library is being used after hours, a security guard will be stationed at the entrance to the library and each time that you enter, you will need to present your ID and be asked a few questions. Be sure to have your Mount Sinai ID with you.  As always, beverages in closed cups or bottles are permitted; food is not allowed.

Circulation services, including reserves, will not be available during the time that the security guard is on duty.

You may have already noticed that library hours are slightly different this week and next due to the winter break. From December 19 through January 1, hours are:
