New Psychology Databases at the Levy Library

The Levy Library recently added two important resources in the fields of psychology and psychiatry: PsycTESTS and PsycTHERAPY. 

PsycTESTS is a research database that provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessments as well as descriptive information about the test and its development and administration. The content is primarily unpublished tests, but also includes links to buy commercially available instruments.

PsycTHERAPY is a database of actual videotaped therapy sessions, complete with full, searchable transcripts.  A very unique resource, this database includes individual, couple and family therapy sessions on more than 200 topics. 

Both of these databases can be access through the Levy Library databases page, by searching in the top bar.  Or, browse through our Social and Behavioral Sciences databases to see what other resources are available.

Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology and other new stuff

Don't get the idea that we are putting all of our eggs into the renovation basket! While we're getting new carpets and paint and furniture, we're also getting new books and journals and databases at a pretty regular rate. There are always at least a few titles on the New Books shelf (today I see Brain's Diseases of the Nervous System, Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy and the Handbook of Clinical Anesthesia, among others). We've also been getting some new online resources that we'll be spotlighting in the next little while. The first one I wanted to mention is the frequently requested Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology. Access it from the link above or from our e-books page (as usual, you'll have to log in with your Mount Sinai ID if you're off campus) to find clear explanations of the mechanisms of disease and treatment, complete with lots of graphs and illustrations. Clinical Skills Week Resources

Last week was clinical skills week, when we got to meet all of the medical students entering their third year and learning some of the skills they'll need for their clerkships. One of those skills is being able to find the information necessary for patient care, so reference librarians Polly and Laura shared some of their favorite resources. Here they are, with a word about each:

PubMed: What library workshop would be complete with mention of PubMed? (OK, so there are a few). Specifically, remember MeSH searching, Boolean operators and the Limits tab, and try the Clinical Queries tool (found in the blue bar on the left side of the PubMed homepage) when you are looking for research studies for specific question types - e.g., therapy, diagnosis, prognosis, etc.

AccessMedicine, MDConsult, and the E-books database are good sources for textbook-style background information and sometimes images, videos, guidelines and more.

UpToDate (on campus only), eMedicine and PIER are full of clinical topic reviews that combine the latest evidence with expert recommendations.

ACP Journal Club and the Cochrane Library are evidence-based medicine resources: ACP Journal Club provides structured reviews and commentary on selected high-quality articles from 100+ journals, while the Cochrane Library publishes systematic reviews and meta-analyses of highly relevant topics. Search them separately using the above links, or together using EBM Reviews.

Free Videos from NIH

The National Institutes of Health host frequent events at their campus in Bethesda MD, many of which are open to external researchers and the public - if you can get to Bethesda. But they're also extending their reach far beyond the Beltway by posting video and audio files of hundreds of events and seminars on the web. The NIH VideoCasting and Podcasting page lists them by date and by topic. Browse through a wide variety of lectures from "Translational Studies on the Met Tyrosine Kinase Receptor System in the Autisms" to "The Science of Failure in Medicine" to "Preparing for Grant e-submission: a Tutorial for Postdocs", and many more. You can download them individually to view with QuickTime, or subscribe to them via iTunes or RSS.

PILOTS, Post-Traumatic Stress Database

The library now has access to PILOTS (Published Literature on Traumatic Stress), a database produced by the National Center for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.  Its goal is to include citations to all literature on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental-health sequelae of traumatic events.  Access PILOTS from the library's databases page under the category Psychiatry and Psychology.  Please note that this is NOT a full-text database, nor is it possible to link from PILOTS to the Levy Library's full-text articles.  To obtain the full-text for items found in PILOTS, please use the e-journals page and the online catalog.
