Improved Citation Export to EndNote and RefWorks

The Levy Library has been testing an improved export from the yellow Levy Library Find It button.  Now, when you click on the yellow button to access the full text of an article, you will also get the option to email the citation to yourself or to export the citation directly to EndNote or to RefWorks.  These exports also work with other citation management software such as Mendeley.  If for some reason you can’t get to the article from that page, let us know you found a problem through the Report an error link at the bottom of the menu.

As a reminder, to get to the yellow button links to full text through PubMed, make sure you go to PubMed through the library website.  The link is the first one under Key Journals & Resources.  This button will also show up in other databases that have citations instead of full text.

Mendeley: Free and Easy PDF Management and Social Networking

Are you looking for a better way to manage PDFs and share references with your colleagues?  Levy Library is holding our first Mendeley class on March 26.  Mendeley is a free desktop and web-based program that combines reference management and social networking to help researchers stay on top of an increasing number of PDFs and to work collaboratively with their colleagues.  Mendeley operates in PC, Mac and Linux environments and links with Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.  Register and check it out! 

 

RefWorks 2.0 is Here!

On Friday, October 28, 2011 the default interface for RefWorks migrated from the original RefWorks Classic to RefWorks 2.0. RefWorks is a web-based reference management service licensed for Mount Sinai by the Levy Library. It allows you to save and organize your reference in your personal database, and automatically format bibliographies and papers in MS Word.

RefWorks 2.0 includes all the funtionality of the original RefWorks database, but streamlined with a clean, intuitive design. Key functions are easily available via new buttons, navigation toolbars, action icons, and collapsible menus. You can still use the RefWorks Classic interface for the remainder of 2011; look for the the links to RefWorks Classic on RefWorks 2.0 pages. RefWorks will retire the Classic interface in 2012.

EndNote Tech Tip

 Most of our savvy EndNote users know that if they want to use their EndNote library on multiple computers they should keep their library on a flash drive.  And many users also know that if you need an Output Style that isn't in the default format, you can download it from the Endnote website by opening the Style Manager and clicking "Get More on the Web."  But if your library is on a flash drive, where do you put the downloaded style so that you can use it?

The answer is: Output Styles always need to be in the EndNote Styles folder, which will usually be under Program Files on the C: drive.  You can save the style on your flash drive so that you'll always have it, but on each computer you use you will need to copy that style file to C:\Program Files\Endnote X4\Styles.

RefWorks 2.0: the new interface is here!

Good news for RefWorks users: the 2.0 interface is now live! When you log in to your account, or sign up for a new one, you'll still see the "classic" interface for now, but you can switch to 2.0 anytime by following the link to "RefWorks 2.0" in the upper right corner of your RefWorks screen. In a few months, the new interface will become the default, and for now you can use whichever interface you prefer.

We've been playing with the new interface a lot at the Library, and so far we like it! The features are laid out well, and a lot of things are easier to find than before. Take a look for yourself - and if you'd like a guided tour, you can check out the different RefWorks webinars (both live and recorded) or ask us to show you. Later this summer, we'll be offering more classes too, so keep an eye on our class schedule.

Alert! EndNote X4.0.2 Fix for PubMed Records

A new connection file for EndNote X4.0.2 is now available to import journal names correctly from PubMed. The PubMed connection file included with EndNote X4.0.2 for both Windows and Mac places the full journal name in the Journal field rather than the abbreviated journal name. This problem only affects EndNote X4.0.2, other versions of EndNote are not impacted. Learn more and download the fix from the EndNote Web site.

Classes! Scopus, EndNote, NCBI, etc.

We've just added some classes to our schedule, including a few new ones. If you're interested in finding out who is citing your papers, or using that information to calculate metrics like the h-index, sign up to learn about one of our newest resources, SciVerse Scopus. And, as usual, we have lots of classes available to help you with all kinds of things, including literature searches (Scopus, PubMed), managing your references (EndNote, RefWorks), preparing presentations and publications (Photoshop, PowerPoint), and finding genetic and genomic information (NCBI, genome browsers, pathway analysis software and more).

Patch Available for EndNote 2010 Date Display Issue

EndNote reports that a patch is now available for EndNote X2 that will address the 2010 date display issue.  To install, close all programs and turn off any background software, such as virus protection software.  From within EndNote, choose "EndNote Program Updates" from the "Help" menu and follow the on-screen prompts.

EndNote reports fix available shortly for data import of 2010 references

EndNote reported a problem last week with importing references for articles published from 2010 or later in all versions of the software except EndNote X3. *Please be aware that if you are using End Note X2 or earlier, the date field for any year 2010 articles that you import may be blank.*  If this occurs, you will need to  manually enter 2010 in the empty year field.

EndNote plans to make a patch available to fix this issue for EndNote X2 and EndNote X1.  The patch for EndNote X2  is expected in early 2010.  The patch for EndNote X1 will follow in the first quarter of 2010.  End Note no longer supports EndNote X and earlier versions, and does not plan to provide a  fix for those versions.  More details can be found on the EndNote website - http://www.endnote.com/support/Faqs/Import/faq20.asp.
